The Steps

STEP 1

First, find your planting zone. Planting zones help you determine the best types of plants to use, and choose the best time of year to plant them based on your geographical location.

STEP 2

Decide how big of a garden you want to plant. We’re making a 6ft x 5ft garden here because it’s a manageable beginner size, but you can choose whatever size suits you best!

STEP 3

Choose your vegetables! Keep in mind that different veggies require different spacing. Be sure to refer to the plant tag for other growing requirements.

STEP 4

Don’t forget your companion plants! Marigolds and basil are two of our favorites!

STEP 5

Map out your garden on paper. Be sure to note North, South, East & West, and be mindful to place shorter plants on the South side of taller ones.

STEP 6

Prepare the native soil using a shovel and metal rake.

STEP 7

Pour your organic soil, then mix it 50/50 with the native soil using your shovel and rake.

STEP 8

Mix in organic fertilizer to add nutrients for your plants.

STEP 9

Place your plants (without actually planting yet!) according to the garden map you drew. This will help determine the space you’ll have between each plant.

STEP 10

Begin planting!

STEP 11

Add planting stakes by your beans and tomatoes, then secure them with garden twine.

STEP 12

Water thoroughly!

STEP 13

Add organic mulch.

STEP 14

Add a border to enclose your garden. This will help to block out weeds and small pests!
